End Portal planning
What the Stronghold marker tells you
A Stronghold is an underground structure that can contain an End Portal room. The marker narrows your search to an X/Z area generated from the seed, edition and version. It does not place the portal room on the surface or reveal the safest entrance.
Java and Bedrock use different Stronghold placement rules, so the same numeric seed can produce different coordinates. Select the edition used by your world before planning a route or comparing the result with an Eye of Ender.
Use the map to compare travel distance and terrain before leaving your base. A slightly farther Stronghold with an easier Overworld route can be more convenient than the closest straight-line result.
How to find a Stronghold from your seed
- 01Copy the complete world seed, including a minus sign when it is negative.
- 02Paste the seed above and press GO, then choose Java or Bedrock and the version that generated the area.
- 03Keep the Overworld selected. Strongholds are underground Overworld structures even though they lead to the End.
- 04Open the Finder tab to compare candidate distance and direction from spawn.
- 05Click a marker to copy its X/Z coordinates, then inspect the terrain and choose a route from your base or Nether hub.
- 06Confirm the final approach in game with Eyes of Ender and search underground for the portal room.
The marker is not the portal room
A Stronghold covers an underground area with corridors, stairs and rooms. The generated marker is a search anchor, not an exact surface entrance or guaranteed portal-room block. Begin near the marked X/Z, follow Eyes of Ender, and explore at the appropriate underground height.
Java and Bedrock need separate results
Do not transfer a Java Stronghold coordinate into a Bedrock world. Choose Java for Java Edition worlds and Bedrock for mobile, console, Windows and Realms. Matching the edition is more important than matching similar-looking surface terrain.
Plan the journey, not only the distance
Straight-line distance does not describe oceans, mountains or the route from your actual base. Use the biome map to compare surface travel, or divide Overworld coordinates by eight when planning a Nether connection. Verify both portal exits before relying on a long tunnel.
When the result disagrees with the world
Check every seed digit, the minus sign, edition and version. In an upgraded world, the target chunk may have been generated under older rules. Custom generation, datapacks, add-ons and server software can also change the expected result.
Stronghold Finder questions
Does every Stronghold contain an End Portal?
A generated Stronghold is the structure to search, but the map does not verify the finished portal room block by block. Confirm the location in game before building permanent transport.
Why does an Eye of Ender point beside the marker?
The marker represents a useful structure coordinate, while an Eye of Ender guides toward the Stronghold area according to in-game behavior. Use both to narrow the underground search.
Can I use Java coordinates in Bedrock?
No. Stronghold placement differs by edition. Switch the finder to the edition that created your world.
Should I select the End dimension?
No. Strongholds generate underground in the Overworld. The portal inside them is what takes you to the End.
Can an old world have different coordinates?
Yes. Chunks created before an update keep their existing terrain and structures. Match the version that generated the target area.
Does the finder show the nearest Stronghold to my base?
The nearby list is measured from spawn. Use the map and your base coordinates to compare the route that matters to your world.

Map and coordinate reports
For a missing or misplaced result, include the full seed, Java or Bedrock, game version, dimension, coordinates, and what appeared in the world. Mention mods, datapacks, add-ons, experiments, server software, or old chunks when relevant.
